Malek just did a prison break movie with the Papillon remake, so I wouldn't use him.
Phoenix and Washington could make for an interesting duo, especially if the roles are co-leads. If Washington's role is a bit more prominent I'd go with Ali or Duke.

I like the James Wolk suggestion. They're the same height and have a similar jaw-line.
For the wife of Phoenix (obviously not knowing much about the story, so I'm just picking actresses that would probably accept a smaller role and potentially work well with Phoenix): Mireille Enos, Maria Thayer, Charlotte Riley, Ginnifer Goodwin, Chloe Sevigny, Emily Mortimer, Aya Cash, Alison Pill, Lily Rabe, Linda Cardellini.

I've got an upcoming war film. I need some casting, I have ideas of my own but would like to hear others ideas.
The main character Tom Hartley: American aged 25-35. He has a dark past.
I need 2 aussies one in his early 20s and one late 20s early 30s.
I need a British man. aged 25-35
A British woman 25-35
A Malaysian actress (or of Malaysian descent)
And a Japanese Actor (Main villain)
Most are in it for the majority of the film.

In weird casting situations like that, as long as it's not a big role, it's okay to simply not cast the role.
