Sorry about that Mo Buck Writers Association, I moved Skyrim to the end of the round to give me a little extra time in which to prep a Game to Film segment.

I don't know, it lacked something, but can't quite put the finger on it. Let's say I have very mixed feelings about it.

I gotta say I'm bummed by it too. But it is a summary of what the story is. Truly the book is haunting. If Hallowayne did a faithful version it would have done more damage like how Ubik and Hazel Wood did.

I have never read or even heard about the novel before, so I can't really talk about it, but do you liked it or not? One post says you loved it and one post says you didn't really, so maybe more like mixed feelings about it?
Speaking of this, I think sticking to a source material, no matter how serious, or haunting it is helps the cause. I mean imagine if Ubik's script barely scrapped the surface, I would have been even more mixed up than I already was. Let's take a look at LRF examples that are, for me the prime examples of why you should stick to a book and not just scrap the surface. Survivor, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, yes it's weird, yes it's whack, but for me, it's Great, with a capital G. Flicker, based on the novel by Theodore Roszak. Yes, it's disturbing and weird, but the film was still great and one of the best LRF films for that matter, but it sticked to the book and it worked tremendously. I think the adaptation should have dived deeper and really show us what the source material really was, because, as you said, it's haunting. As I already said, I haven't read the novel, but I have a feeling it could have been better (especially with that cast)

Eileen falls into the camp of a film like The Girl on the Train for me - melodramatic story line without any characters worth rooting for. So I'm probably in the same camp as Dom where I have mixed feelings on it - strong casting and some compelling scenes, but too over-the-top (without going into fun over-the-top Nic Cage territory) for its genre and unlikable characters.

Eh. It's not a movie that'll appeal to everyone. Dramas have always been a powerplaying genre in movies, but it's better to keep it grounded and simple. Otherwise you risk making it too melodramatic and losing its relatability.
From what I saw from the movie, it did cross that line a few times. That said, I do think the beginning was very nice and I did enjoy the character of Rebecca.
In the end, I think this is a movie that'll go as a mixed bag. A lot of excellent decisions were made, especially with casting. But also some decisions made that held the movie back.
I dont know how faithful the movie was to its source material, but I will say this: I think this will definitely be a movie that will be talked about for a long time to come.
