I'd love to hear everyone's approach to picking directors

Depends film to film for me.
Sometimes it comes pre-packaged with the concept (PTA/Squared Circle, Eastwood/Buried Child). Sometimes a trusted hand/veteran who has worked in the genre before is a safe route (Howard/Beatles, Hallstrom/One for the Ages). And other times it is fun to take a gamble on an up-and-comer who has shown promise and I think would be could do something interesting with the material (Kogonada/Cascade, Baker/Trip).

I have my go-tos when I need a quick pick if the director is unavailable.
I'd like to write for small or middle class directors cause writing for bug directors is too hard because of their own style.

I also look at their body of work if I'm unsure about someone.
