I just got done watching Tree of Life and was wondering if there was a chance a sci-fi Terrence Malik movie can be done here. I mean his style is so difficult to write for cause he never goes by his script

I would say that it is just important that to not ignore story when trying to make a Malick film. He may get poetic with his more recent films, but there is still always an interesting story at the core. Even if he doesn't end up following his script to a T, the story is still there and that should not be ignored in the attempt to write a film for him to direct (the scenes and characters may change, but he still keeps the basic story he started with).
The Tree of Life - A man looks back to his childhood in 1950s Texas with his domineering father and loving mother. To the Wonder - A couple falls in love in Paris, but struggle to keep things working after moving to the U.S. Knight of Cups - A writer who feels empty has relationships with eight different people, each representing a different tarot card. Song to Song - Two love triangles intersect in the Austin music scene.

It will probably be tricky to pull off the addition of his particular shots, since those are just things he finds in the editing room (and LRF is primarily story based). You definitely could do narration and scenes with no dialogue though.

Personally, he seems more interested in studying the human condition than in science fiction.

I don’t wanna be mean but just write the story. Don’t focus on how to write a movie for this specific director. Just write something. Because as many of us at Last Resort Films have experienced you don’t always get the Director you want or the cast. It’s good you have an idea on the director you want but don’t try to write a Terry Malick cause you never know it might not work out.

If you’ve written the story already go to Admin and work it out from there.

Wanted to post here. I think I have an outline for a story that works as a Terrence Malick film, I wanted to know if someone would be keen to look at my outline and give me their reaction to it.

So basically the question asked is, “what is the essence of life”. The film would then follow a renowned painter as he travels the world with an up and coming artist trying to find the meaning. Meeting people and seeing wonders along the way.

I could picture Malick making a film about a renowned painter traveling around to try to find the perfect subject to paint to capture the essence of life. A second, younger painter going on this journey with him feels a bit off (and not as Malick-y) to me. Unless they have an emotional purpose to the theme (since Malick's films are more based on themes than actual plots), I don't see the need/purpose of such a role.

Ok cool, thanks
I have a few actors on a list, can you think of any you would want to see star in a malick film as an artist

Christian Bale would be the obvious choice to me given the number of times they've worked together. Some other people who come to mind: Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Gary Oldman, Christoph Waltz, David Thewlis, Johnny Depp, Peter Dinklage, Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch
