I had a lot of criteria for the casting in my X-Men film, and Magneto proved to be the most difficult role to cast. I wanted someone in their mid 50s, so they'd be a handful of years older than Xavier. I wanted someone charismatic, but that could pull off sinister. I wanted someone who would be imposing, much like Magneto in the comics and the early 90s animated series (my first exposure to the X-Men world). I also wanted someone who was well known, or at least recognizable, but not someone who would be super expensive. That didn't leave me a ton of choices, and then I took out actors who have already recently appeared in superhero fare. In the end, the shortlist was narrowed down to David Morrissey, Jerome Flynn and Liam Cunningham. I felt like Morrissey fit more of my criteria than the others, so he's who got the part.
It's more of me never seeing him anything. If I haven't seen black sails and would have googled Toby I would have said the same for him as both of their filmography is not know to me that much but as I have seen him act I could confidently saiy that he will work wonders with a Dwight Gallo script. Oh love the other two but by looks David is more magneto than the other two. Stephen Dillane would also have been good but he doesn't fit your age criteria. P.S for anyone else not disagreeing or anything just trying to pick the brain of another writer as most of the other writers don't have a blog where they share their process.
I certainly took no offense to your comments, Jack. I simply took it as a chance to discuss a role that was very difficult task. Stephen Dillane was on the list of initial actors I was going to take a look at, but he honestly just doesn't look very imposing at his current age. If I were casting the film 5 years ago, he'd probably have had a better shot at the role. David Morrissey is known to most in the U.S. (where I live) from his time on "The Walking Dead", but I already knew of him from stuff like the Red Riding series, The Reaping (not a good movie, but he's good in it), Stoned, and the legendary Basic Instinct 2. As for Toby Stephens, he was on my shortlist for both the roles of Xavier and Magneto - mostly due to his role on the new "Lost in Space", but "Black Sails" did show me that he can pull off the bald look.

Zach McGowan, I think he has a face for certain character but he can be easily slotted in a lot of comic book roles. Rebecca Ferguson tells me Mystique will be front runner in this series. Liking the casting of Jean Grey. For some reason I have never been a fan of Millie Bobby Brown maybe this will change it.

Perhaps a X-Men spinoff could be what finally gets jackryder2 back into the LRF fold? (Again, just wishful thinking )

I love love love the X Men. In a long time very excited for something. If I would have known we could try a X Men film(I think it got approved because of Dwight Gallo script) you would have seen an adaptation of X Men Evolution. I always hope i got a bit of time on my hands but don't have a laptop or pc to wrote so to quench my thirst O have been playing another game where I just wrote 2 or 3 sentence.

Dwight amazing cast like always, man. You are the King of casting.
I was wondering tho, you don't have to give to much away but is Cyclops gonna be the front man like he should have been in the Fox movies?
I just seen articles from people how he is actually the most important character in the comics.

I tried to create more of a true ensemble than Fox ever managed, but let's just say there is a reason I sought out a rising star for the role of Cyclops.

I watched the Fox films fairly recently after I had finished my script. There were both good aspects and bad aspects to them. Since they kickstarted the superhero genre, there wasn't much of a template for the early films. Bryan Singer's action direction doesn't hold up very well (aside from the Nightcrawler opening in X-2) in the first couple films, and they clearly went away from the ensemble and just made every film about Wolverine. My favorite aspects of all of the Fox films have to be Kelsey Grammer's Beast in X-Men: The Last Stand (which isn't nearly as bad as I had remembered) and Evan Peter's Quicksilver appearances. I have still yet to see Dark Phoenix, and based on what I've heard I am certainly in no rush.

Love the Robert Sheehan casting! He was highlight of Misfits but I haven’t seen him in much since then and this seems like a good spot for him.

Fichtner definitely gives the Trask vibes, he can definitely play the part as easily as Peter Dinklage or better. Scratching my head to think what is Brett Cullen playing. Robert Sheehan definitely has the toad face. YOU THINK YOU KNOW ME Edge has quietly being doing some good roles. Sabertooth will suit him. I think I will move Zach being a certain character from 90% to 98%.

Fichtner is great in everything, so I had to have him in the cast (very early on he was also considered for Xavier along with an A-Lister about to make his LRF debut). Brett Cullen's role isn't huge, but it'll make sense in the film.
Zach McGowan does have the physique and aggression of a certain famous X-Man, doesn't he? Hmmm..... Don't count out an appearance by any Alpha Flight characters though.....

A lot of potential characters for Zach just opened up with that comment, damn he can be so easily slotted in various comic book roles.

Clearly I'm not alone based on his casting in Red Sonja. I will say that he was cast based partly on his performance in "Black Sails" and largely on videos I saw of him working out on Instagram.

I like him very much, I think he has a lotof charm and charisma, acting I wouldn't say he is underrated. I have watched him on black Sails and agents of shield.

If you're referring to who I think you're referring to, I could totally see him fitting into that role but he could also overshadow the film at the same time. Haven't seen Black Sails but I enjoy Toby Stephens in Lost in Space so I think he'll make a great Xavier. And first Edge makes his return to wrestling after a ten-year retirement and now he's cast in a huge blockbuster franchise. Getting to be a good year for him.
