So for Halloween, I've watching the classics, From Beyond, Fright Night, The Fly, The Witches, Monster Squad, Poltergeist and The Exorcist. All of them for the first time. I kept thinking if practical were so cool and why no one does them anymore and go to CGI that won't be at par. Like I kept thinking for the remake of the Witches and The Thing, what would have been wrong if you updated that.
So I guess what I'm asking is it possible to do a film like that that does have some CGI but only for the huger effects? I mean is it more expensive or not?

Is this an LRF-specific question or a more general question?

We generally take a common sense approach to the budgeting of the films (including the potential costs of CGI, and practical effects). Obviously something like Hawkworld or one of the other DC Comics Universe films are going to require a lot of computer generated effects, but then a film like Zombielove isn't going to have a $50+ million effects budget so the zombies there would be done with practical and make-up effects. It's all on a case by case basis. The bigger the film and the bigger the action, the more likely CGI will be used, but smaller films will be more likely to use more practical (and less expensive) effects. Your question felt vague, but hopefully that answers it.
